Recently, I chanced upon Nyonya Chendol, a hawker stall that specialises in chendol. I tried their sweet iced dessert and was really impressed by how delicious it tasted!
Nyonya Chendol
Nyonya Chendol is a chendol specialist hawker stall that has expanded rapidly in the past few years. It currently has 6 outlets across Singapore.
I visited the Boon Lay Hawker Centre outlet, so I will be reviewing the chendol at this stall.
For the unfamiliar, “chendol” is a sweet shaved ice dessert comprising pandan jelly, coconut milk, and gula melaka (palm sugar syrup).
Menu
Nyonya Chendol offers 4 types of chendol. The plain chendol costs $1.50. You can also choose variants with sweet corn ($2), red beans ($2), or XO durian ($3).
Red Bean Chendol
It is quite interesting to see how the Red Bean Chendol ($2) is prepared.
The hawker lady creates the shaved ice using the ice machine, then deftly douse it with creamy coconut milk and golden-brown gula melaka, before adding pandan jelly strips and red beans.
The shaved ice has a very smooth and consistent texture. And I simply love the wonderfully sweet flavours of the glossy gula melaka and rich coconut milk.
The luscious red beans are the highlight here – cooked perfectly with great bite, complimenting the chendol perfectly with its distinct flavour.
The velvety pandan jelly worms complete the experience with their aromatic fragrance and delicious taste.
Sweet Corn Chendol
If you are not a fan of red bean, go for the Sweet Corn Chendol ($2). It is prepared exactly the same way, but is added with sweet corn instead of red beans.
The mushy sweet corns have great bite and add an extra dimension to the chendol.
Conclusion
The chendol at Nyonya Chendol in Boon Lay Hawker Centre is seriously super satisfying. And this cold icy dessert is especially perfect for Singapore’s scorching weather.
It is also really affordable, with the plain chendol going for just $1.50 (though the portion is a little small).
I haven’t tried the XO Durian version yet, but I will be checking it out soon, so watch this space!
At the end of the day, I don’t really care much for all the controversy surrounding this dessert. All I want to do is enjoy my delicious bowl of chendol drizzled with sweet gula melaka and coconut milk.
